77-year-old Grandma Bags B.Sc. at Unilag 2018 Convocation Day One

As the popular saying goes, “She believed she could, so she did”, this is the story of Okonji Bridget Obiageli, a 77-year-old woman who stole the show at the Unilag 50^th (2018) Convocation Day One Ceremonies. Popularly called “grandma” by her classmates, short word for grandmother, Madam Bridget, wowed the audience by defying the myth that learning is for the young.

She bagged a Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) from the Department of Educational Foundation (former Guidance and Counselling Department), Faculty of Education, ��㽶��Ƶ, under a Sandwich programme. Achieving this feat at the age of 77 earned her major accolades by all and sundry.

In an interview with reporters, she disclosed that she enrolled in the Sandwich programme to ward off boredom and gain additional knowledge. She stated that she is a retired officer who had worked in several countries across the globe before retiring in Nigeria.

Her story serves as a beacon of hope, reminding everyone present at the Unilag 50^th (2018) Convocation Day One and hopefully all those reading it, that it is never too late to dream or achieve greatness.

The entire ��㽶��Ƶ community wishes Madam Okonji Bridget Obiageli and all graduating students of the 2017/2018 academic session, the very best in their future endeavours.

Job Description

The INSPiRED project aims to develop easy-to-operate smart optical diagnostics devices for parasitic diseases which are integrated (include sample preparation and diagnosis), inclusive (cocreation with relevant stakeholders), and thoroughly tested in laboratory as well as field settings in endemic countries. The INSPiRED project is a collaboration between Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), Delft University of Technology, University of Ibadan, ��㽶��Ƶ, and CERMEL (see Annex 1 for project summary).

Currently, optical detection of light density early-stage parasitic infections requires the analysis of large volumes of sample material. Without computer-assisted analysis, an enormous amount of information is transferred by optical systems and processed by laboratory personnel. However, the information capacity of a microscope objective is physically limited by the laws of physics while processing of information is restricted by the natural limits of human abilities.

To increase information throughput, multi-modal imaging and digital holography are being developed in our optics laboratory in Delft. ��For example, ptychographic imaging allows an order of magnitude increase of image information content by exploiting the higher harmonics of light scattered by samples.

The PhD will develop and optimise optical imaging techniques in collaboration with optical experts in Delft and industry. The methodology will be based on the combination of optics and data processing with high information throughput to generate�� high-content images which�� will be analysed using computational inverse scattering, neural networks and mathematical decision theory.

Requirements

Prospective applicants should have a strong academic record in artificial intelligence, embedded system or relevant engineering field, with solid background in machine learning, computer vision and digital image processing. Good software development and programing skills are expected, preferably in python/MATLAB.�� Knowledge of deep-learning frameworks(TensorFlow/Caffe) and OpenCV is a plus. A certain affinity towards turning complex theoretical concepts into real-world practise (developing proof-of-concept & prototypes) is desired.�� Candidates should have a minimum of of 2nd class upper for their BSc (2nd class lower with very strong practical experiences will be considered). All applicant(s) are expected to be able to act independently as well as to collaborate effectively with members of a larger team. Good English skills are required.

Research will be performed in collaboration with ��㽶��Ƶ where the candidate is expected to work and spend most of the PhD years .

The Board of Trustees of the Professor Ayo Ogunye Professorial Chair in Chemical Engineering, ��㽶��Ƶ, is calling for entries from Monday, March 18 to Monday, June 17, 2019 ahead of the Fourth Edition of the Research Grant Competition.

Below are rules and criteria for prospective applicants:

General

The Board of Trustees of the Professor Ayo Ogunye Professorial Chair in Chemical Engineering, awards a limited number of grants yearly to a maximum of N1,500,000.00
��A. The Fund is designed for the exclusive use of the applicant for his/her research.

B.The main body of work must be undertaken by the applicant while the non-essential parts may be carried�� out by other parties.

�� The Trustees main research interest will vary from year to year and this will be made known�� during the call for the competition.

It is expected that the grant will normally be used for the purchase of equipment, services or chemicals.
Under the usual conditions of funding, no portion of the grant may be used for personal expenses such as the payment of an assistant or research student and will not normally be used for the purchase of books or subscriptions to journals or magazines. Only in exceptional circumstances, and specifically to aid the furtherance of the research programme, may a portion of the grant be used for travel; details of which must be explicitly stated in the application.

Application and Assessment

Applicants must be members of a University or others carrying out independent research in Nigeria.
Applications are limited to one per department and MUST be submitted through the Head of that department.
Preference is given to those working in less well-endowed institutions. Applicants from early to mid-career researchers are encouraged.
Persons employed as research students will not be considered for funding.
Applicants carrying out research under supervision are required to have their applications signed by their Supervisor.
All applicants will be required to provide the names of two referees (in addition to that of the Supervisor where Regulation 9 is applicable). Normally, at least one of the referees should work in a different institution. Referees should provide a reference that assesses the content of the research proposal submitted.
Applicants are required to provide information on:
i. The nature of the research which he/she desires to engage in and the nature of the scientific results expected to follow there from.
ii. Where the research is to be carried out.
iii. The approximate full cost of the research and a breakdown of the proposed spending (expenditure) should the grant be awarded. This should include quantities and approximate costs for each item.
iv. What other sources of financial assistance are available to the applicant for research; whether these are available in this instance and to what value.
Each grantee will be required to provide a midyear report (minimum of 1000 words) on the progress of the research at the end of six (6) months as well as a detailed end of project report, together with a statement of expenditure. The end of project report should begin with a summary of the main conclusions of the research. The report itself should include an outline of the work done, techniques used, results obtained, conclusions reached and a judgement of the success or otherwise of the project, together with prospects for future development.
The applicant will be responsible for providing the report, for receiving and disbursing the monies and for the general conduct of the research.

Others

All papers or publications describing investigations conducted with the aid of the Professor Ayo Ogunye Research grant must contain acknowledgement of that fact.��One reprint each of such publications should be submitted with the final report (see Regulation 12) or as soon as possible thereafter.
A grant will not normally be awarded to the same applicant for more than two consecutive years.
The Trustees reserve the right to modify the size of the grants in accordance with the sums annually accruing to the Fund.
The Trustees have the power to alter the above Regulations and to attach any other conditions it may deem desirable.
The Trustees reserve the right to withhold the grant in the absence of good applications in any year.
The Trustees decision is final and applications cannot be resubmitted or reconsidered in the same round.

According to a statement, yesterday, by the UNODC, the students emerged winners of Hackathonfor Justice event organised in Lagos by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in partnership with Facebook and Africa TeenGeeks was designed to spark
creativity in young people while pushing their coding capabilities for 24 hours.
