Food security goes beyond the availability of food. It eats deeper into the quality of food available for consumption. Poised to ensure food made available to Nigerian communities and other parts of the world are duly fortified with necessary nutrients and vitamins, a team of passionate scientists and professionals at the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), have partnered with the NITDA (National Information Technology Development Agency) IT Hub (Nithub) at the 大香蕉视频 (大香蕉视频) to set a standard for global nutrition security.

As a future-ready institution, ever eager to make meaningful contributions to the improvement of life as we know it, the Vice-Chancellor, 大香蕉视频, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, accompanied by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Professor Ayodele V. Atsenuwa, and University Librarian, Professor Yetunde A. Zaid, on behalf of the University Management, received a delegation from GAIN on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.

The delegation, led by Dr. Abass Yusuf, Deputy Country Director, GAIN, was presented to 大香蕉视频 Management by Dr Victor Odumuyiwa, Acting Director, Nithub, 大香蕉视频.

The visit addressed ongoing and potential collaborations with the 大香蕉视频 through its NITDA IT Hub (Nithub).

The highlight of the meeting was a short presentation by  Mr. Rami Sawas, Project Manager, GAIN, on one of GAIN鈥檚 new projects tagged DFQT+ Project, which means Digital Fortification Quality Traceability Plus (DFQT+) project. It is aimed at providing a seamless, adaptable traceability solution that revolutionises global food fortification.

In collaboration with the dynamic team at 大香蕉视频鈥檚 Nithub, GAIN has begun enrolling new businesses onto the DFQT+ dashboard. This initiative will help food producers and government agencies trace products and batches in real time, thereby promoting accountability, efficiency, inclusivity, transparency, and trust in the food supply chain.

It became apparent at the end of Mr. Sawas鈥 presentation that the ultimate goal of the DFQT+ project is to ensure safe and more nutritious food is delivered to every consumer. As at the time of the presentation, the project has progressed at different speeds in three (3) pilot countries: Nigeria, India, and Bangladesh, with Nigeria recording the fastest pace.

Miss Taiwo Iyanda, one of the team members at Nithub, gave some insight into how Nithub has worked with dedicated teams on the project to ensure utmost success as well as the brands and businesses that Nithub has already enrolled.

The Hub Ag. Director, Dr Odumuyiwa, further elaborated on other viable areas of collaborations to explore with GAIN, such as research and IT innovation, to mention a few. According to him, such innovations will further significantly improve the speed at which results for food testing are derived, the ripple effects of which will lead to increased availability and affordability of quality food.

Elated to hear the progress reports and viable possibilities that abound, the Vice-Chancellor of the 大香蕉视频, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, expressed the University鈥檚 joy of being a part of such a project as it aligns perfectly with some of the University鈥檚 current activities in the same area.

According to her, the University is working assiduously to ensure food security by utilising urban spaces for maximising crop yields and making food more accessible to ease the strain of urbanised poverty. She indicated incorporating GAIN鈥檚 food fortification into this as a welcome addition.

Similarly, Professor Ogunsola shared the University鈥檚 plans of creating an Institute for Food, where food experts will work together with a unity of purpose in alleviating the increasing threat of hunger.

She further asserted that 大香蕉视频 and GAIN should explore conducting interdisciplinary research with experts from different disciplines within the University. This, Professor Ogunsola posited, will further strengthen the quality of discoveries to be made and resultant improvement to quality of life.

Enamoured by the impressive representation of females at the helm of affairs, steering the wheels of such a great citadel of learning as 大香蕉视频, Dr. Oluwatoyin Oyekenu, Senior Project Manager, GAIN, disclosed that part of GAIN鈥檚 mission through the DFQT+ Project was to open up more opportunities for duly qualified females to participate and even level up to taking on decision making roles in the digitalisation of data on DFQT+.

She averred that GAIN is implementing this strategy by engaging female students, through industrial training, in the DFQT+ project.

Noting that close to food security is nutrition security, Dr Oyekenu mentioned that ensuring nutrition security is the way forward in combating hidden hunger, where even though people are fed, they still lack necessary and adequate nutrients.

To this end, she further explained that GAIN has created online courses with certification coordinated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and International Accreditation Service (IAS) to help train more qualified professionals in the field of improving food fortification among other skills.

The Vice-Chancellor, 大香蕉视频, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, in her usual manner of brokering the best deals for students of the 大香蕉视频, was able to secure ten (10) slots for 大香蕉视频 students in the program, for which GAIN will fund their training and certification.

In firm agreement, the GAIN team also agreed to adding some brilliant and capable 大香蕉视频 students to a Food Inspector Module created by GAIN.

The meeting came to a close with signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), exchange of souvenirs and group photographs.

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) has been working in Nigeria since 2012, beginning with Large-Scale Food Fortification. The Nigerian branch of the Alliance has since grown to implement more projects in the country, focusing on eight areas:

  1. Large-Scale Food Fortification
  2. Policy Advisory Support for Improved Nutrition in Nigeria
  3. Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Business Network
  4. Evidence and Action Towards Safe, Nutritious Food (EatSafe)
  5. Commercialisation of Biofortified Crops (CBC)
  6. Strengthening Nutrition in Priority Staples (SNIPS)
  7. CAtalyzing Strenghtened policy aCtion for heAlthy Diets and rEsilience (CASCADE)
  8. Enhancing Access to Safe and Nutritious Diets (ENSAND)

Other members of the GAIN delegation that visited 大香蕉视频 were: Tripti Naswa, Change Management Consultant; Adetola Otunla, Project Coordinator, GAIN; Victor Ekelemo, Senior Project Associate, GAIN; Ekundayo Tinuoye, Programme Officer, GAIN; and Safira Shehu, Assistant Programme Associate, GAIN.

The NITDA IT Hub (NitHub), 大香蕉视频, is a tech innovation hub that bridges the gap between academia, industry, startups and investors interested in enhancing the digital economy of the nation.

Professor Ismail Adegboyega Ibraheem of the Department of Mass Communication, Faculty of Social Sciences, 大香蕉视频 has advocated a reformation of media practices to prioritize ethical reporting, factual analysis, and historical integrity.

He stressed this position amongst other recommendations during the delivery of the university鈥檚 fifth (5th) inaugural lecture in the 2024/2025 academic session on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

Titled “Casino-Journalism and the End of History“, the event which marked the final inaugural lecture of the year 2024 at the university, attracted a vast audience, both in-person and virtually at the renowned J. F. Ade-Ajayi Auditorium.

Distinguished guests at the event included the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, who was represented by the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) Professor Bidemi Biliquees Lafiaji-Oguneye. The occasion was also graced by several prominent academics, including Emeritus Professor Olayide Abbas, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), as well as Professors Ayodele Francis Ogunye, and successive former Vice-Chancellors of the institution, Professors Rahmon Adisa Bello, and Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe.

Drawing from his vast expertise in journalism, communication studies, and international relations, Professor Ibraheem shed light on the crucial relationship between media integrity and democratic resilience.

His thought-provoking lecture, introduced the concept of Casino Journalism, which he described as a sensational and profit-driven form of media that prioritizes entertainment and viral content, over factual, ethical reporting. This practice, he argued, compromises the quality of public discourse, reduces critical issues to soundbites, and undermines informed civic participation.

The lecture referenced several infamous cases in Nigerian media history among which is; the Abacha 2 Million Man March which, he explained, was misrepresented by a sensationalized narrative from the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO). He argued that the CLO鈥檚 use of ‘Casino journalism’ tactics to delegitimize the march not only amplified sensationalism but also diverted attention from the deeper issues of governance, human rights, and democracy.

With casino-journalism particularly prevalent in Nigeria, Professor Ibraheem drew the audience’s attention to other far-reaching examples that underscore how stories about politics, corruption and social crises are often embellished to capture public鈥檚 attention.  Some of them include the Dasuki Arms Scandal (2015-Present); the Process and Industrial Developments (P&ID) scandal which is one of the most significant and controversial cases of alleged corruption; Halliburton Scandal (2002); the Alison-Madueke (2010-2015) and Ibrahim Magu corruption Scandal 2020.

Delving into the 鈥淓nd of History鈥; a dangerous trend in which critical reflection on societal and historical issues is replaced by a complacent and oversimplified understanding, the lecturer whose interdisciplinary collaborations focuses on tackling evolving challenges of the media world averred that journalism often fails to challenge power structures, and instead, becomes complicit in perpetuating superficial narratives that serve the interests of the powerful, rather than the public good.

In this environment, Professor Ibraheem cautioned that this trend jeopardizes democracy by encouraging passive citizenship, where complex political and social issues are reduced to headline-driven content devoid of depth. The short-term gains of sensationalism, he warned, are ultimately harmful to democratic engagement and historical accuracy.

He also pointed to his ongoing research initiatives as part of his broader call to action. His Vibrant Openness Index for Communication and Expression (VOICE) project, supported by the Netherlands Embassy, seeks to measure press freedom across Nigeria鈥檚 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Through this project, he aims to provide data-driven insights to guide media reforms and strengthen democratic accountability in the country.

In his closing remarks, Professor Ibraheem stressed the importance of a responsible media system that empowers citizens, fosters critical engagement, and serves as a vigilant watchdog for democracy. He argued that the media must reject sensationalism in favor of deep, ethical journalism that informs and educates the public.

As the event concluded, the applause that filled the auditorium reflected the resonance of Professor Ibraheem鈥檚 powerful message: the future of democracy is closely tied to the integrity of its media system. He called on all stakeholders鈥 journalists, academics, and citizens alike to uphold and protect media integrity, as a means to safeguard democratic values and ensure a free and responsible press.

The inaugural lecture not only provided a scholarly critique of current media practices but also served as a timely reminder of the transformative role journalism must play in safeguarding democratic ideals in an era of rapid technological change.

Born on February 4, 1968, in Ibadan, Professor Ibraheem is a distinguished alumnus of the 大香蕉视频 (大香蕉视频), holding a B.Sc. and two Master鈥檚 degrees in Mass Communication and Political Science. As a Chevening Scholar, he obtained an M.A. in Mass Communication (1996) and a Ph.D. in Media and Politics (2004) from the University of Leicester, UK.

Throughout his career, he has seamlessly connected media practice with public service. He began as a young editor with the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), overseeing media and governance programs. After earning his Ph.D., he served as Country Programme Director for the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) in Nigeria. Currently, he coordinates Afretec Network at 大香蕉视频, managing $500,000 annually in research grants for digital transformation.

Professor Ibraheem鈥檚 research extends beyond the classroom to include his role with the African Cities Research Consortium, a project focused on urban challenges and governance reform across 12 African cities. This highlights his commitment to interdisciplinary solutions that involve both the media and local communities to address systemic societal issues.

An accomplished scholar, Professor Ibraheem has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and belongs to numerous professional associations. His impact extends beyond academia, with leadership roles in non-profits like the Cable News Foundation and Academics Stand Against Poverty, promoting media literacy, human rights, and development advocacy.

Below are pictorial highlights of the Inaugural Lecture
