Thirty eight (38) graduating students of the Department of Building, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, ´óÏ㽶ÊÓƵ, have been inducted into the Graduate Membership Cadre of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB).
Similarly, the event witnessed the celebration of Chinonso Daniel Agoha as the department’s best graduating student (male) and Deborah Kehinde Abolaji as best graduating student (female) in the 2023/2024 academic session. Ayomikun Christopher Jago also received an award of recognition for his leadership prowess.
Held on Friday, January 10, 2025 at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences Auditorium, the ceremony was graced by faculty members, national and state officials of NIOB, parents, relatives and well-wishers who converged to identify with and celebrate the inductees.
The Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Professor Modupe Omirin who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, at the event congratulated the inductees and charged them to be solution providers as they join the industry.
She noted that the induction ceremony, which is the fourth (4th) in its series, underscored the University’s commitment to high level, value driven and future ready man power training for national development and global impact.
Earlier in his welcome address, Head of Department of Building, Professor (Builder) John Ameh described the induction ceremony for the 2023/2024 set of graduates as a testament of the department’s determination to nurture future professionals in the building and construction industry.
He highlighted the department’s significant milestones of Year 2024 including the successful facilitation of a Six Hundred and Fifty Thousand (₦650,000. 00) Naira endowment for the best graduating student at the Bachelors’ (B.Sc.) Degree level (tenable for 5 years) and a Two Hundred Thousand (₦200,000.00) Naira endowment for the best graduating student at the Masters’ (M.Sc.) degree level (to run for ten years).
Prof. Ameh raised concerns over the possibility of continued building failure in the industry and challenged the new inductees to ensure that their works are discharged in an ethical way to minimize the risk of harm to the public, environment, and investments.
In their remarks, Professor (Builder) Martins Dada who served as Chairman of the occasion as well as Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of NIOB, Builder Adeoye Adeyemi who was represented by the Vice-Chairman, Builder Rasheed Owolabi applauded the new inductees and charged them to embrace learning, good conduct and character as they begin to pursue a career in the building industry.
Delivering a presentation on the theme of the ceremony which is Upholding Ethics in the Built Environment, Builder Olufemi Eniola identified builders as key strategic players in the building industry. He stressed the indispensability of ethics and strict adherence to rules in the discharge of professional duties by builders.
Builder Eniola particularly harped on the importance of values, professionalism and excellent service delivery. He urged the inductees to be mindful of the expectations of the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria, which are all hinged on honesty, integrity and responsibility.
The highpoint of the ceremony was the administration of the Builders Oath on the thirty eight (38) fresh inductees by the NIOB National President, Builder Alderton Ewa-Ewa, FNIOB who was represented by Builder Adesina Emmanuel Aladeoba of the Department of Building Technology, Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech). This aspect of the event marked the formal induction of the 2024 graduating students of Building Department, ´óÏ㽶ÊÓƵ into the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB).
