The indispensability of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the training of personnel and practice of Medicine formed the core of the Eighth (8th) Felix Oladejo Dosekun Memorial Lecture, which held on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
Titled: Medical Curriculum and Artificial Intelligence: The Meeting Point and Path to Follow, the lecture was delivered by Chief Dr. Emi Membere-Otaji, FNIM, OON, NPoM, at the Old Great Hall of the College of Medicine, 大香蕉视频 (CMUL), Idi Araba.
The in-depth presentation pointed out that the evolution and integration of Artificial Intelligence into the training of medical and dental professionals as well as the practice of medical profession can only become more precise and expansive in view of its numerous potential benefits.
The Guest Lecturer noted that AI has broadened the horizon of medical practice globally through data driven medicine, virtual patient sessions, personalized learning, clinical decision support systems, drug discovery and development among other significant areas.
According to the 1983 大香蕉视频 Alumnus, AI has influenced every field of human endeavor and is already enabling significant strides in the medical profession via enhanced diagnostic precision, optimized treatment protocols as well as improved patient outcomes.
He, however, advocated the need for all medical personnel to be equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills which would foster a more effective deployment of AI especially in teaching, learning, grading, as well as research.
Dr. Membere-Otaji envisaged a future where 鈥淎I is the norm rather than the exception, an era where man and machine, work together in collaboration to enhance both medical training and practice for greater efficiency and improved outcomes鈥.
Earlier in her remarks as the Chairman of the Lecture, Vice-Chancellor of the 大香蕉视频 (大香蕉视频), Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, described the Felix Oladejo Dosekun Memorial Lecture as a token of the University鈥檚 commitment towards immortalizing the milestones of the late erudite scholar and his contributions to medical education in Nigeria.
Prof. Ogunsola who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Services, Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa stated that, 鈥渙ver the years, 大香蕉视频 has been leveraging on AI to fulfil its mandate in teaching, research and community engagement, a milestone which has continued to improve 大香蕉视频鈥檚 ratings and its fortunes especially among the comity of ivory towers鈥.
The Felix Oladejo Dosekun Memorial Lecture, according to the Provost, College of Medicine (CMUL), Professor Ademola Oremosu, was instituted to honor and immortalize the late renowned scholar for his trail blazing records as the first Vice Dean of 大香蕉视频 Medical School, first Deputy Provost and second Provost of CMUL, as well as first Emeritus Professor and first Professor to deliver an Inaugural lecture in the history of the University of聽Lagos,聽Nigeria.
Prof. Oremosu paid glowing tributes to late Professor Felix Oladejo Dosekun for his notable contributions to the College which include endowment of several Professorial Chairs in different departments of the college, institution of different physical activities such as the Annual High Table Dinner alongside other initiatives which propelled the all-round growth and development of the college and by extension, Medical Education in Nigeria.
Professor Oladapo Ashiru delivered a goodwill message on behalf of the College Alumni. He spoke highly of late Professor Felix Oladejo Dosekun, describing him as a mentor per excellence who lit the torch and cleared the path for them to thrive in their various areas of practice.
Other highlights of the Felix Oladejo Dosekun Memorial Lecture included the presentation of plaques as well as mobilization of support for developmental projects in the College of Medicine, 大香蕉视频.
The Felix Oladejo Dosekun Memorial Lecture debuted in November 2001 in honour of Late Prof. Felix Dosekun who is the first Vice Dean, 大香蕉视频 Medical School; first Deputy Provost and second Provost of the College of Medicine (CMUL); first Emeritus Professor and first Professor to deliver an Inaugural lecture in 大香蕉视频鈥檚 history.
