Proactive Ethics Program (PEP) Workshop Ends on High Note

The 3-day Intensive Training Workshop on Higher Education Ethics hosted by the ´óÏ㽶ÊÓƵ (´óÏ㽶ÊÓƵ), ended on a high note on Friday, January 31, 2025 with participants expressing readiness to commit to ethical practices with a view to making ´óÏ㽶ÊÓƵ a better place in terms of standards, engagements, impacts, and outputs.

Activities on day 3, focused on Organizational Ethics in Higher Education, Advanced Proactive Ethics Program with emphasis on Social Ethics, Ethical Theories and Ethical Decision Making Procedures for mitigating administrative and academic ethical issues, financial research and Athletics ethical issues.

Participants also had a swell time deliberating on case scenarios in demonstration of their newly acquired knowledge in Proactive Ethics Program (PEP)as it covers ethical frameworks, theories, ethical decision making procedures, guiding laws and principles.

There were also suggestions on creating ethics committees to ensure an integration of the training outcomes into processes across departments and faculties.

Dr. Babatunde Sawyer of the Department of Computer Science and Research Lead, Machine Intelligence Research Group (MIRG) addressed participants on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in relation to its accountability, validity, reliability, explainability, Security and Privacy.

Held at the Arthur Mbanefo Digital Research Center (AMDRC) of ´óÏ㽶ÊÓƵ under the auspices of the Office of International Relations, Partnerships and Prospects (IRPP), the 3-day Intensive Training Workshop on Higher Education Ethics, kicked off on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 in demonstration of the university management’s commitment towards ensuring enhanced operational standards and improved service delivery.

Facilitated by a Fulbright Specialist and Deputy Ethics Officer from the Texas A&M University, Central Texas, USA, Professor Russell Porter, the training set out to, among other things, help participants appreciate and internalize Proactive ethics with a view to promoting standards while also driving excellent service delivery.

The 3-day Intensive Training Workshop on Higher Education Ethics had the following objectives:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the broad field of higher education ethics within the framework of the law, and with moral-individual perspectives.
  2. Identify key ethical theories and ethical decision-making processes to mitigate compliance issues, as well as other higher education ethical issues.
  3. Develop an ethics-based method to proactively prevent legal issues.

Learning outcomes of the programme were to:

  • Synthesize how higher education ethics contribute to an improved education overall
  • Evaluate how ethics planning provides a proactive means to mitigate ethical/legal issues.
  • Evaluate different employee positions and how they can interact in an ethical means.
  • Synthesize the relationship of faculty members to students and staff.
  • Categorize different student interactions and relationships in higher education using ethics to mitigate potential relationship issues.
